One by one I watch them pass
Don’t they know that today is my last?
I watch the younger dogs come and go,
It’s all over today—Don’t they know?
I hear the footsteps come down the hallway
Please Lord, Don’t them take me today!
A little boy stops to stare,
But continues on without a care.
And elderly man and wife stroll by,
The others jump, and whine, and cry.
I stare in silence, and hope for the best,
But they pay me no attention and look at the rest.
A Booming voice floods my cage,
But it sounds faint to me in my old age.
She unlatches the gate pats my head.
I wag my boney tail, hoping to be fed.
But today she fumbles, and her hands shake,
It all feels like a dream, although I am very awake.
She takes me by the collar, and leads me down the hall,
I have been paged; this is my final call.
We walk to a small room of all white,
She looks at me and says, “It’ll be alright.”
She bends down and kisses my nose.
I return the favor and lick her painted toes.
She puts me on the table and strokes me fur.
I don’t take my old eyes off of her.
She picks up a syringe lying nearby,
I start to whimper—she tells me not to cry.
My chest grows heavy; it’s hard to breathe.
I try to stay strong, for I know no one will grieve.
I am just another number, just another face.
But finally I have been set free from this place.
That's just a little something i wrote to go along with this picture. This particular dog has been at the pound for about a month, and he's looking at his last days here. Sad, huh?
Wow, (sniff) that was a tear jerker. Poor puppy. I really liked this whole piece, good rhyming, good message, and nice picture to top it all off. Wonderful piece you got here Holly.

WoW!! Thanks for the FAV! i really appreciate it! i told you the other night i was in a writing mood, and i just went for it! lol! Anyway, i suck at poetry for the most part. i know nothing about it. i just know you got to rhyme. (Bad poetry! oh no-etry!!)
I love to go to the humane society and play with the puppies and the kitties for fun, but it's always sad knowing that 1/2 of the animals admitted to the shelter get euthanized. (sorry, i had a PETA moment there!) Well, i am glad you like it. I am pretty partial to it myself. I even had the notion of sending it in an e-mail to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, but i think it would get mixed reactions. Oh well...It was just a little something to speak my mind.

That's really a sad message, no way better expressed than through the gaze of a dog who's experiencing it. Very well captured, very true pose. Now, this would be a really heavy piece if there had been humans in it too. I mean, I really feel like going to get this dog right out, but I'm socialising with animals every day. Some just can't (or won't?) see the feelings an animal express. Now, if you ever go to a children's home and see a kid waiting to be picked up, then put it beside this shot, I think it would reach more people and get a whole lot more attention. But of course, that's hard. The emotinos would have to get through as well as in this shot, which isn't so easy.
Good message (well, it's bad, but you get what I mean). The dog really gets the point across.
That'd be great Good luck, you'll need it. -I always have these difficult ideas. But if you are creative, you might just figure something out. Perhaps you can do a collobaration (sp?) with someone?
wow evertime i read this it reminds me of a sad story i found awhile ago on the internet about a cat being abused and killed. man i hate animal cruelty. its like when i read about it i can get close to tears. its like i want to change it but i know i cant do anything about it. its just going to happen.
